EMAILS to the Brit banker charged with murdering two prostitutes get the
reply: “Please contact someone who is not an insane psychopath.”
Ex-public schoolboy Rurik Jutting, 29, has appeared in court over the double
killing.
Dressed in a black T shirt with a New York logo and wearing dark trousers,
bearded Jutting spoke only twice to say “I do”, when the two murder charges
were put to him and he was asked if he understood.
One victim has been identified as Sumarti Ningsih and her decomposing body was
found stuffed inside a suitcase on the balcony.
The other was known locally as Jesse Lorena but police believe this to be her
working name.
Sumarti, 25, was the first to die in the £3,000-a-month flat on October 27 and
Jesse was killed five days later.
The prostitutes’ rotting remains were found in his Hong Kong flat, with one
stuffed in a case.
Cops are also examining Jutting’s mobile phone pictures to see if there are
more victims.
The chilling “insane psychopath” message is sent to people writing
to his bank email address.
It reads: “I am out of the office. Indefinitely. For urgent enquiries, or
indeed any enquiries, please contact someone who is not an insane
psychopath.
“For escalation please contact God, though suspect the devil will have
custody. (Last line only really worked if I had followed through . . )”
It is not known if Jutting wrote the message before leaving his
£350,000-a-year job at Bank of America last week, or if someone else changed
it.
Prosecutor Louise Wong asked for Jutting to be remanded in custody as a police
video reconstruction of the murders would be held later this week.
Defending Martyn Richmond told the court how his client had been refused
permission by Hong Kong police to contact his own solicitor and the British
Consulate General during his 36 hours in custody.
He said:”There were frequent requests to do so but this was not permitted.
Contact was declined and he was told he must contact a lawyer from the duty
list.”
Jutting was later driven away in a prison van to an undisclosed jail. After
the hearing Mr Martyn said: “I can’t really say very much as
proceedings are active. I have spoken with him and he fully understands the
charges against him.”
The girls’ slaying after a cocaine binge in his flat has led one ex-friend to
compare him to banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman, played by
Christian Bale in 2000 film American Psycho.
The friend, who studied with Jutting at Cambridge University, told The Sun he
was obsessed with rowing, going to the gym and having a muscular physique.
The pal said: “No one can believe that Rurik seems to have turned into the
real American Psycho.
“He was taking cocaine with prostitutes in his luxury apartment, almost like
he was trying to live up to an overtly masculine, heterosexual stereotype —
just like Bateman.
“Maybe he was living a lie with the prostitutes and something just snapped
when he was with them.”
Jutting was arrested in the early hours of Saturday after calling police to
his £1,700-a-month rented flat in Wan Chai district.
Officers found the naked body of a woman in the living room with her throat
cut.
They later found the mutilated body of a second woman stuffed in a suitcase on
the balcony.
Sex toys and cocaine were found in the flat and cops believe Jutting had taken
drugs at the time of the murders.
Detectives found more than 2,000 photos on his phone, with some linked to the
murders.
It is claimed he had taken shots of Sumarti, whose remains had started to
decompose when police found them in the case.
She was wrapped in a towel, her arms and legs were bound with ropes and she
had been almost beheaded.
CCTV footage showed Jutting and Sumarti returning to his flat last Monday —
six days before his arrest.
Some photos allegedly show blood dripping out of her head, while others are
close-up images of her body.
CCTV from Friday night shows Jutting returning to his apartment with a
scantily-clad woman, believed to be Jesse.
They are said to have met at a Halloween party in a bar.
Police found her naked in the living room with her throat and buttocks
slashed.
A large butcher’s knife was seized at the scene.
Police sources say there were indications of a struggle, and that Jesse had
scratched Jutting with her fingernails.
They described the apartment as blood-soaked when they arrived at 3.30am on
Saturday.
Sources said Jutting seemed confused and would only tell police to “see for
yourself” what had happened.
He later refused to respond to questions, it was claimed.
A pair of shoes believed to belong to one of the girls was found in a bin on a
street near the apartment building.
Neighbours in the 40-storey block, known as J Residence, complained of a
smell, thinking it was that of a dead animal.
Jonathan Sharkey, originally from Airdrie, Scotland, said: “You could smell it
throughout the building.
“It was only when reporters started turning up that we realised what had
happened.”
Jutting’s Cambridge University pal claimed he had one brief relationship
during his college days, but appeared awkward around girls.
He said: “He had a girlfriend called Lorna, but nothing really long-lasting.
“He was never one of the loud boys but he showed his masculinity in other
ways.
“He was a member of the rowing club and then got a career in the very
masculine world of investment banking.”
A female friend added: “This is just not in his character. He’s hardworking
and intelligent — a gentleman.
“It doesn’t make any sense.”
She described Jutting as someone who did not party hard at university and
never knew him to take drugs.
Jutting grew up in Cobham, Surrey, where his parents still live in a
£1.2million cottage.
Dad Graham, 53, is an engineer and his mum Helen, 52, runs a number of kids’
nurseries in South West London.
They also have a fast food company, Foxwarren Limited, which owns a branch of
milkshake chain ShakeAway.
Jutting also has a brother, Auryn, 27. The family refused to comment
yesterday.
Before reading history at Peterhouse, Cambridge, Jutting went to primary
school in Nether Wallop, Hants, then £20,000-a-year Abberley Hall prep school
in Worcestershire and £35,000-a-year Winchester College.
When he graduated he landed a job with Barclays in the City, a position he
held for just over two years before being recruited by Bank of America in
2010.
While there he rented a luxury £1million apartment in Wapping, East London. He
was transferred to Hong Kong in July last year.
A porter at the Wapping block described Jutting as “a bit of a loner”.
He said: “He was just one of those that kept his head down.
“He used to have a girlfriend. They lived together for a while then they broke
up and she moved out.”
On Friday, Jutting changed his Facebook cover photo to a news cutting
titled “Money DOES buy happiness”.
He also changed his profile picture to a newspaper clipping titled “Is 29 the
perfect age?”. The article states that researchers have discovered
29-year-olds are “more popular than any other age group”.
Sex worker Sumarti arrived from Indonesia on a visa last month.
She had been arrested on suspicion of breaching the conditions of her stay.
Jesse’s friends last night held a minute’s silence at her favourite pub.
The Foreign Office said: “We can confirm that a British national has been
arrested in Hong Kong. We are in touch with police and are ready to provide
consular assistance.”
Tale of evil cash king
AMERICAN Psycho is a chilling novel and film about a privileged banker who
snorts cocaine and tortures and murders hookers.
Wall Street money man Patrick Bateman — played in the 2000 movie by Christian
Bale — is obsessed with wealth, his image and beating rivals.
But he admits his “mask of sanity” is slipping as he becomes a serial killer.
He slays a pal, uses the man’s flat to butcher two vice girls while high, then
goes on a murder spree.
