The news comes just a day after a plot to attack a fan park in the city showing Belgium's Euro 2016 clash with Ireland was foiled.

Police were called after two abandoned suitcases were spotted in the station.

The country's national rail company SNCB confirmed the station had been shut following a "police order".

Eye-witness Daniel Munevar wrote on Twitter: "Just walked by Gare Central in Brussels. Was shut down and lots of police coming in. Stay safe."

Rail services were suspended for around half an hour as bomb disposal experts investigated the unattended luggage.
