Girl, nine, hailed a hero after discovering abandoned newborn baby in her back yard
Elysia Laub, from Indiana, US, found the tot covered in maggots with her umbilical cord attached

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl has been hailed a guardian angel after she found an abandoned baby lying her her back yard.
Elysia Laub saw the tot lying in the grass, and thought one of the family’s pigs had escaped from their pen.
But she had actually spotted the newborn baby girl , who was covered in maggots and still had her umbilical cord attached.
She rushed to find her mum and tell her what she had seen in the family’s garden, in Indiana, US.
She told : “I knew it was alive and I knew we had something. I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to get help.”
Her mother Heidi immediately called 911 and there was no doubt their quick thinking saved the child’s life.
She said: “I got to the house and we put one of our baby blankets around her.”
Luckily the tot had only suffered minor sunburn – but she would have most probably died if she had been left any longer in the heat.
She now has the nickname “Miracle Jane Doe.”

Sheriff John Buncich said of Elysia’s actions: “It’s obvious that this child, from the medical reports, was born just a few hours before it was found.”
The child has been cared for in hospital and will move to stay with a foster family.
The state of Indiana, there is a Safe Haven law which allows mothers to leave their child anonymously at any hospital, or fire station without being charged.
It is thought the baby could have been left out overnight.
