Hit and Run

HUNDREDS of people ignored a man dying man from hit-and-run injuries on the side of a road with one even stealing his phone, but not calling for help.

Video footage of a New Delhi street shows a stream of cars, motorcycles and pedestrians pass the fatally injured man who had been struck by a green truck.

CCTV footage shows the moment a small truck hits the man from behind and sends him flying across the road.

The driver leaves his cab and glances towards the bleeding man before getting back in his vehicle and driving away.

In the next 30 minutes people stream past the dying man who lies crumpled on the side of a busy street in the country's capital city.

The one man who does pause bends down and steals what appears to be the victim's phone, which was lying beside him in the gutter.

After 30 minutes a friend of the man's went past and alerted the authorities who, it has been reported, took 40 minutes to arrive.

The man was dead before he arrived at hospital.

The Times of India reports a police spokesman saying: "The man was hit by a speeding tempo after which the driver fled the scene.

"He had sustained critical injuries on his face and neck and was bleeding from forehead.

"It is possible that the locals did not notice him or they may have taken him for a drunkard or a vagabond."

Local reports have said the man, called Matibool, had been working as a rickshaw driver during the day and a security guard at night to support a family in another area of India.

The release of the video has sparked a debate about the lack of compassion showed.
