It’s believed he was abducted by a gang in the north Dublin area before being bundled into a car.

Investigators believe he was targeted over an unpaid drugs debt and had his ear sliced off before being dumped from the vehicle.

We also understand that the ear was recovered and doctors are hopeful of saving it.

A source said: “This was a shocking attack and doctors are battling to save the victim’s ear. It was completely severed but thankfully it was found.

"The victim is someone who has a long history of abuse and association with drugs and he’s lucky he wasn’t killed in the attack.

“He was taken away and left in a remote area but still managed to contact the Emergency Services. It’s not the first time users have been targeted in this way and it won’t be the last.”

The victim - who hasn’t made a complaint over the attack - is known to officers but isn’t involved in organised crime. Officers believe a vicious north Dublin drugs gang may have been behind the barbaric attack.

Gangs in the north and south inner city areas of the capital have also been putting pressure on users to pay their debts.

A source added: “The only thing these people care about is money and they have no problem in subjecting people to serious levels of intimidation.

“Innocent families also continue to be targeted by gangs because of debts and once someone owes money it’s very hard to escape the clutches of the gangs.

“They will use various methods of intimidation, assault people and even have users commit murders over unpaid debts. It’s a terrible cycle that shows no sign of ending at the moment.”
