Who was Charlie Kray?

Charlie was the oldest of the Kray clan and often cited as the brains of the family’s criminal empire.

Born in 1927, his younger brothers, Ronnie and Reggie, have become widely known as the face of the family, especially after the 2015 film Legend, with Tom Hardy playing both siblings.

Charlie’s career started in amateur boxing, before going professional in his 20s.

Over the years, he built up his criminal empire, but if the twins were the brawn, he was the brains.

Considered a crucial component in the family’s business, he worked alongside the brothers until it all came crashing down in 1969.

Did Charlie Kray go to prison?

After the murder of George Cornell in 1966, who was another criminal and member of a rival gang known as The Richardsons, the Krays dynasty collapsed.

George was shot and killed by Ronnie at The Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel in the East End of London.

Ronnie was sentenced to life imprisonment three years later for the murder and remained in Broadmoor Hospital until his death on March 17, 1995.

He died due to a heart attack.

For Charlie’s involvement, he received a 10-year sentence for being an accessory to the crime.

He died in 2000 at the age of 73 while serving a 12-year sentence at Parkhurst prison on the Isle of Wight.

Charlie had been convicted in 1997 of attempting to smuggle cocaine valued at £39m into the UK.

Did Charlie Kray have children?

In 1948, Charlie married Doris "Dolly" Moore on Christmas Day.

They had two children together, Gary, who died from lung cancer in 1995, and Nancy.

She is still alive to this day, living in the East End of London where her relatives used to terrorise the streets.

Nancy was admitted to a psychiatric ward following Gary’s death, spending the last two decades in and out of care.

She even underwent electro shock therapy.
