In the email, it is said he used a tone which implied he knew of the affair and could expose it.

Gates, 67, has denied he paid the fees.

A spokeswoman for him said: “Mr Gates met Epstein solely for philanthropic purposes.

"Having failed repeatedly to draw Mr Gates beyond these matters, Epstein tried unsuccessfully to leverage a past relationship to threaten Mr Gates."

A clip shared online in 2010 showed Mila talking about meeting Gates at a bridge tournament.

She said in the video: "I didn't beat him but I tried to kick him with my leg."

According to the Journal, Mila wanted to set up an online business teaching people how to play bridge.

The outlet says documents show Mila was then introduced to Epstein though one of Gates' advisors to help her raise money.

She hoped to raise $500,000, but Epstein did not end up investing in the project.

Mila then decided to focus on becoming a software developer - and Epstein agreed to fund her education.

She told the Journal: "Epstein agreed to pay and he paid directly to the school. Nothing was exchanged. I don't know why he did that.

"When I asked, he said something like, he was wealthy and wanted to help people when he could."

Mila also told the outlet she stayed in an apartment provided to her by Epstein in 2014 - but the pair didn't meet.

According to the Journal's report, Epstein then emailed Gates in 2017 to ask him to reimburse the course's cost after failing to persuade him to participate in a multibillion-dollar charitable fund.
