A highly respected Royal Navy Commander has been jailed for 10 months for putting his hand down the pants of a female sailor on a train ride back from a boozy day trip in Amsterdam. Cdr George Walton was second in command and responsible for discipline on one of Britain's biggest warships when he sexually assaulted the woman as they travelled back to the Dutch Naval base. After HMS Albion moored at Den Helder, in the Netherlands, 45 year old Cdr Walton and others decided to go for a day trip to nearby Amsterdam where they enjoyed a 'few drinks'. However, on the return journey, Cdr Walton, who has served in the Royal Navy for over 25 years, ignored the woman's protests to lift her top up and put his hand down her shorts in an 'appalling' sexual assault. The warship is on a four-day visit in Vietnam as part of activities to celebrate the 45th founding anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties. According to media reports on 06 September 2018, HMS Albion was confronted by Chinese military while exercising 'her rights for freedom of navigation' in full compliance with international laws while passing in late August by the Chinese-occupied Paracel Islands, in disputed waters in the South China Sea -- an area claimed by China, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. William Peters, prosecuting at Bulford Military Court, said Cdr Walton had begun touching her and she had tried to laugh it off.

But he added: “Cdr Walton then lifted up her T-shirt and put his hands under her shorts and touched her.

“She reacted sharply, telling him to get off, grabbing his hand and throwing it away from her.”

The following day, Cdr Walton was put on leave as the complaint was investigated.

The woman said in a statement: “I have tried to put this into my past. But it has always been a stress to me, especially when deployed.”

Michael Green, defending, said Cdr Walton, who admitted the charge, had quit alcohol since the incident and admitted his “behaviour was utterly unacceptable and incompatible with serving life”.

Sentencing Cdr Walton to ten months in military custody, Judge Advocate General Alan Large said: “We have no doubt it would have affected unit cohesion and the reputation of His Majesty’s Royal Navy.”
