Pensioner, 77, loses arm and leg after being attacked by two dogs while protecting his pet

A PENSIONER lost an arm and a leg after being attacked by two dogs.

Witnesses said Vic Franklin, 77, was savaged in the street as he tried to protect his pet spaniel from the hounds.

One said: “They ripped his jacket off, his trousers, his shirt — all he had left on was his pants.

“They dragged him up and down. I told my wife to ring 999.

“I said they’ll need an ambulance and guns.” Armed police shot dead the dogs, believed to be rott­weilers, during the attack in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

Vic had to have his left leg, right arm and left middle ­finger amputated after August’s horror attack.

He is still recovering in hospital, but said: “I wouldn’t be here without our emergency service workers. I’m eternally grateful.”

Son Lee praised his dad, saying: “When he woke from surgery, his first thought was to ensure everyone was safe and that the dogs could do no further harm. As far as we’re concerned, he’s our hero.”

A man of 29 was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, and is on bail.
