Who is Falklands War survivor Simon Weston and what happened to him?

IT has been 40 years since the Falklands War saw British troops sent to defend our South Atlantic territory from invading Argentine junta forces.
The two-month conflict, which started on April 2, 1982, saw a 21-year-old Welsh Guardsman Simon Weston sent to battle.
Who is Simon Weston and what happened to him in the Falklands War?
Born on August 8, 1961, Simon Weston is a former Welsh Guardsman who was severely burnt when his ship was bombed in 1982 during the Falklands War.
He suffered burns to half of his body when the RFA Sir Galahad ship he was on was hit by an Argentinian fighter pilot.
A total of 48 men were killed after the vessel was fired on by First Lieutenant Carlos Cachon.
He survived the attack and went on to even befriend the man who bombed the ship.
Following his recovery he has become an author and motivational speaker.
Simon received a CBE in 2016 for his charity work.
In 2022, he is taking on the world of reality TV.
Simon and wife Lucy are joining other celeb couples in Unbreakable, hosted by Rob Beckett.
The six part series will see them undergo a series of mental, physical and emotional challenges.

What has Simon said about his Falklands experience?
In 2017, Simon spoke candidly about his time in the Falklands, and how he didn't want the war to "define him".
He told the : “I spend a lot of time doing motivational speaking. I understand all there is to know about self-doubt.
"For a long time I was down and depressed and suffering terribly with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
“But I realised the best thing anyone can do in life is believe in who you are, like who you are, and be confident.
"As long as you do the right things and try to live your life the right way, you’ve got a chance.”
Simon also revealed he is friends with the Argentinian pilot who bombed his ship and left him with severe burns.
He told the outlet: “I’ve met him since and we remain very good friends.
“We shared a split second in time. Our countries were at war.
"Having spoken to him, he didn’t know there were as many people on the ship as there were."
Is Simon Weston married and does he have children?
Simon is married to his wife, Lucy, and together they have three children - James, Stuart and Caitlin.
The couple met in Liverpool when she was working for his charity, Weston Spirit.
They got engaged on June 8, 1989, exactly seven years after the attack on the Sir Galahad.
They married on May 12, 1990, and they now live in Cardiff.
