"His death has come as a great shock to the whole family and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing."

King Charles and Camilla tonight also paid tribute.

Their statement reads: "The King and The Queen have been informed of Thomas’s death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family.

"In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts
and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family."

Thomas was last pictured at the Celebration of Shakespeare at Grosvenor House Park Lane Hotel in London on Valentine's Day.

He was with his wife Lady Gabriella and the pair posed for cameras as they wrapped their arms around each other.

Thomas and Lady Gabriella were at the event supporting Queen Camilla as she spoke to some of Britain's best actors.

King Charles was at the time recovering at Sandringham after he had undergone a "corrective procedure" for an enlarged prostate in London only days before.

It comes as the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent put on a brave face on Tuesday and attended a memorial just hours after their son-in-law's death.

Her Majesty Queen Anne-Marie, former Queen of the Hellenes and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pavlos, along with other members of the Greek Royal Family, were at Windsor Castle.

The ceremony was held at St George's Chapel - where Thomas and Lady Gabriella were married in 2019.

Prince William and the King were also set to attend, but both had to pull out.

Thomas worked in frontier market investment, and was the director of Devonport Capital.

He was once described as "the most eligible man in London".

Thomas graduated from the University of Bristol with a bachelor's degree in economic history, according to .

He worked in the Diplomatic Missions Unit of the United Kingdom's Foreign Office, and for almost three years worked in Baghdad as a project officer for the Iraqi Institute of Peace.

Thomas then moved into finance, working as an equity analyst for global asset management firm Schroders.

He was managing director of Voltan Capital Management until April 2017.
