FRANCE drew 0-0 with Netherlands at Euro 2024 in the first goalless game of the tournament.

Dutch forward Xavi Simons had a goal controversially ruled out by VAR deep into the second half.

Les Bleus were without Kylian Mbappe, who broke his nose in their last game against Austria.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    58. Sometimes I wonder how Adrien Rabiot is a professional footballer, let alone a starter for one of the best international sides in world football.

Now is one of those occasions as he spoons a half-volley towards the top corner of the stadium.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    56. Another attack from those in orange comes to a halt because of incredibly lazy play by Memphis Depay.

The forward showed no willingness to get himself back into an onside position, and suddenly those Wayne Rooney stories about him turning up for a Manchester United reserve game in his Rolls Royce and cowboy hat make perfect sense.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    54. After Griezmann in the first half, Depay is the latest player to put a free-kick in a promising position straight into the wall.

The forward wastes the set-piece 25 yards out, awarded after Dembele had brought down Simons.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    52. The Dutch open up some space in the French half with Simons accelerating forward and finding Gakpo.

The forward comes back inside with a pass for Schouten, who has a half-chance - more a quarter-chance - to strike from 30 yards.

He doesn't take it, and the attack breaks down.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    50. Kounde forces his way down the right touchline and sends in a cross.

It's cleared only as far as Dembele, who cuts inside, cuts outside, cuts inside again, and then shoots straight at a defender.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    48. If the first half started at a blistering pace, the second has begun in the same meandering fashion that the previous finished with.

It needs something to happen. Anything.

  • Kick-off - Netherlands 0-0 France

    46. Neither Didier Deschamps or Ronald Koeman - two winners of the European Championship as players, by the way - have made a change at half-time.

How long that remains the case with a certain Kylian Mbappe waiting in the wings remains to be seen.

  • First half facts and figures

Hundreds of millions pounds worth of attacking talent on display (and on the bench), but only an accumulative 0.42 xG in the opening 45 minutes.

    Jack Rosser writes...

There were a couple of concerns that - after opening day wins for both of these sides - this could be a bit of a flat occasion.

We've not had a goal yet but what a first half - both sides wonderful but wasteful at the same time, some fantastic and frantic counters and good work on the ball.

Griezmann has been at the heart of most things for France but has also been wasteful with his best chances.

For the Netherlands, AC Milan's Reijnders looks like a real gem. He's been sharp on the ball and enthusiastic and effective in getting forwards.

A couple of early first half goals and this could be a real game to remember.

  • Half-time - Netherlands 0-0 France

    It's goalless at the break.

The French have probably edged a game that has only hinted at bursting into life.

Antoine Griezmann has been the man most likely to make something happen, having registered four of their five shots in the first half.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    45. There's just one minute of time added on at the end of the first half.

It will prove a welcome breather for many out there with a few signs that the game is teetering on blowing up into a battle - if not an entertaining football game.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    43. Griezmann comes across to take the corner and is greeted by a barrage of plastic cups thrown from the stands.

The English Disease in full effect again.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    41. Griezmann lines up the free-kick, planning to curl it goalwards.

He takes aim with his left foot, pulling it straight into the defensive wall.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    40. Van Dijk is penalised for a challenge on Dembele two yards outside the penalty area.

The Dutch captain is absolutely furious with Anthony Taylor's decision, and makes it known as such.

Not that Liverpool fans needed another reason to hate on the Premier League referee.

In fairness to Taylor, I think he got this one spot on.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    38. There has been a goal scored in each of the last nine meetings between Netherlands and France.

These players don't have too long if that run is going to continue tonight.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    36. Thuram is on the receiving end of a couple of sore ones.

He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt when going down in a collision with Dumfries, but soon wins a free-kick when tripped by De Vrij.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    34. Ronald Koeman's team are trying to regain some attacking intensity in a game that has become quite one-paced.

First, Frimpong has a shot charged down by Saliba, and then Simons shoots straight at Maignan from outside the box.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France - Schouten yellow card

    32. The first yellow card of the game is shown to Netherlands midfielder Jerdy Schouten.

The PSV man, adjudged to have dragged down Antoine Griezmann on the break, waves a finger of disagreement in the direction of Anthony Taylor.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    30. With half hour on the clock, France are starting to exert some control on the match, particularly in midfield.

Kante and Tchouameni are on metronome duty.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    29. Thuram creeps in around the back of Ake and has sight of goal.

The forward hasn't seen much of the ball so far so can perhaps be forgiven for the wild and wayward effort that follows.

It soars high above Verbruggen's near post and heads towards the German-Poland border.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    27. The Dutch try to catch out France on the counter.

Frimpong accelerates forward and finds Gakpo, who turns back inside on the edge of the area and tries to slip a reverse pass in for Depay.

The Liverpool man overcooks it, however, and it speeds off for a goalkick - much to his teammate's frustration.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    25. It's become a little bit stop-start over the past few minutes with Anthony Taylor giving his whistle a workout.

Aurélien Tchouameni is doing his bit to keep the game ticking over, having completed all 23 of his passes so far tonight.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    23. Memphis Depay - still rocking the Bjorn Borg/Steve Foster headband look - comes across to the near touchline to take a free-kick.

The former Manchester United forward has struggled to make an impact so far.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    21. Rabiot spoons an intended cross out of play.

The midfielder doesn't seem to be able to pass, shoot or tackle, but he's very good at giving thumbs up to his teammates.

  • Netherlands 0-0 France

    19. Kante is looking every bit as impressive in the French midfield as he did against Austria.

Gliding, spinning, passing and tackling all over the pitch, the 33-year-old really is one of a kind.
