Red Devils caught Napping with Scott sale
COMMENT: It is questionable why any Scotsman would venture outside in 27 degrees of searing Italian sunshine, writes ANDY DILLON.
Proceeding to slug neat whisky from a bottle while sitting atop a roofless bus the day before meeting the Pope represents a whole new level of judgement.
Scott McTominay’s hands were probably shaking with more than nerves as he stood to meet Leo XIV while nursing a biblical hangover.
But as a young man with the world at his feet and a Serie A winner’s medal round his neck, Scottish football’s new Messiah can do whatever he likes. And besides, daft decisions have been following him around for some time.
Not least the one by his former club Manchester United, who thought it great business to flog him to Napoli for £25million last summer, having rejected a bid of £30m from West Ham because it was not enough.
Despite being 6ft 3in, McTominay could never look Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Paul Ince or Bryan Robson in the eye.
But he has scored more goals this term than Rasmus Hojlund — United’s £72m striker. He also scored on the final day for Napoli, who won the Scudetto by a solitary point.
McTominay’s sale was dressed up as a financial necessity but the £42m splashed out on replacement Manuel Ugarte doesn’t look like the best trade off.

Saudis insist Ronaldo might stay
Al-Nassr reckon they can keep Cristiano Ronaldo - despite Manchester United legend suggesting he'll leave.
The 40-year-old declared earlier this week his "chapter is over" in Saudi Arabia, two years after his abrupt Old Trafford departure.
The Portugal striker has failed to win a major trophy with Al-Nassr but topped the Saudi Pro League scoring charts two seasons in a row.
Ronaldo appeared to announce his exit on Monday ahead of his contract expiring on June 30. In a cryptic social media post, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wrote: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all."
But Al-Nassr sporting director Fernando Hierro told a press conference today: "I have to be positive. I don’t think Ronaldo will leave Al-Nassr.
"In any case, we are working hard on all aspects. We will work to renew his contract so he can continue with us, and there are many clubs interested in signing him.

A Manchester United executive reportedly flew to Naples earlier this week to discuss a potential swap deal including Rasmus Hojlund, writes EMILLIA HAWKINS.
The Red Devils endured a disastrous 2024-25 season and are looking to offload some of their under-achievers.
And it is believed that Hojlund is at risk of the axe. The 22-year-old has scored just 10 goals in 52 appearances this season.
Head coach Ruben Amorim has been left disappointed as a result and therefore could sanction his exit.
Italian outlet has claimed that Hojlund could be used as part as a swap deal for Victor Osimhen.
Man Utd transfer chief Matt Hargreaves allegedly flew to Naples recently to speak to Napoli executives about a potential move.
The Serie A champions are understood to be keen on the prospect of signing Hojlund.
And they would be willing to part ways with Osimhen, who has spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Galatasaray.
Plan B after Delap falls through
According to Il Napolista, United are turning their attention to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen after missing out on Delap.

Napoli want to sell the talisman who scored 36 goals for Galatasaray on loan this season but will want Rasmus Hojlund in return, plus £33.5m.

But United must join a queue which also features Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Man Utd director in Naples
United transfer negotiator Matt Hargreaves has flown to Naples for talks with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
New Italian champions Napoli are considering a move for Rasmus Hojlund, who previously impressed in Serie A with Atalanta.
The potential deal for Hojlund to join Napoli is likely part of a broader swap strategy that could involve Victor Osimhen coming to Old Trafford.
Amorim: It is hard to face fans
Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim on how well the players have been connecting with the fans on tour:
"My job is to try and push the players to perform well, that is something I can do as a manager.
"We have a big team, big staff, to do these kind of encounters with the fans.
"When we reach the hotel, we had one hour and then we had training.
"So sometimes it is hard and we need to perform well, that is the only way I can help the club in that department.
"Of course, the team is tired because we flew to Malaysia and with the jet lag we had a game in difficult conditions."
The Red Devils want to avoid back-to-back postseason defeats when they play Hong Kong on Friday.
Amad subjected to 'serious abuse'
Manchester United winger Amad responded to abusive supporters in Malaysia with a middle finger, the club has claimed.
The Ivory Coast international was pictured swearing at fans outside the team's hotel in Kuala Lumper on United's post-season tour.
A video of the incident was widely shared on social media. Alejandro Garnaho did the same thing.
It had been suggested that the 22-year-old had taken exception to supporters shouting "Diallo" at him.
However, United say the winger's gesture was in response to "serious personal abuse" about his mother.
United lost 1-0 to the ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday, with Amad appearing in the second half.
Delap to snub United

The Athletic report that European giants AC Milan and Juventus were included in his list of admirers.
Amad pleads for Garnacho to stay
Amad Diallo has told Ruben Amorim that he hopes Alejandro Garnacho stays at Manchester United this summer.
Garnacho was reportedly told by Amorim last week to find a new club during the upcoming transfer window.
The pair’s relationship has deteriorated in recent months, and Garnacho questioning his manager's decision not to start him in the Europa League final loss to Tottenham appears to have been the final straw for Amorim.
Amad was talking to press in Hong Kong and, while sat next to his manager, expressed his hopes for Garnacho this summer.
“Alejandro is a really good player and we need good players in the team,” Amad told reporters in Hong Kong.
“I know Garna really well, so I hope to have Garna next season. It is not really a big issue for the team. Everything is good now."

Marcus Rashford is reportedly holding out for a move to Barcelona and is saying "no" to other moves, according to in Spain.

Another European final has gone against Manchester United.
A week on from losing the Europa League final against Tottenham, they have been impacted by Chelsea’s comeback against Real Betis in the Conference League final.
According to reports in Spain, United were due to receive around £300,000 had Betis won due to a clause in Antony’s loan agreement.
For 45 minutes the Red Devils were in the money but a second half masterclass from Cole Palmer completed the turnaround.
Furthermore, the irony is that Jadon Sancho got on the scoresheet for the Blues, with an outrageous curler.
