'DISPLAY OF SOLIDARITY'

Wembley Arch lit up in blue & yellow in support for Ukraine amid controversial plan for gestures at Carabao Cup final

WEMBLEY has joined sport's growing support for Ukraine by lighting its famous Arch blue and yellow ahead of Sunday's Carabao Cup final.

And more gestures against Russia's invasion of Europe's second-largest country could come at the home of English football when Chelsea take on Liverpool in the showpiece.

The EFL and FA called the light-up a 'display of solidarity for Ukraine and the people impacted by the ongoing military action'.

Now it's expected EFL chiefs will hold more talks with both clubs on Saturday morning about further action on Sunday.

Protests against Vladimir Putin's invasion and Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich are possible.

Police and stewards have been alerted to what could be a large gathering outside Wembley.

But it's understood the FA will NOT expect security staff to stop fans waving Ukrainian flags inside the stadium.

Russian billionaire Abramovich's status at Stamford Bridge makes it a delicate matter for football chiefs.

And it's understood action could be taken against 'inflammatory' gestures or messages about Russia or Abramovich.

The suggestion is any such banners might be confiscated.

And ultimately fans may be evicted from the ground if protests cross the line being drawn.

FA rules allow internationally-recognised flags to be displayed, as they are not deemed discriminatory, political or religious.

Uefa has already replaced Saint Petersburg with Paris as hosts for the Champions League final on May 28.

And on Thursday night Napoli and Barcelona players united to display a 'Stop War' banner before their epic Europa League clash.
