Can you take an electric toothbrush in your hand luggage?

Rules are in place about what you can bring with you in your hand luggage when boarding a plane.

These restrictions apply to various items, including e-cigs, cigarettes and food.

According to Transport Security Administration (TSA) guidelines, you are allowed to bring an electric toothbrush onto a plane in both your carry-on and checked bags.

However, if your toothbrush contains a lithium-ion battery, it is recommended to take it in your carry-on luggage.

You are also able to take cameras, electrical hair tools and most portable electronic devices — such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets and MP3 players, which can be used during your flight — just as long as you make sure that they are turned off or in flight mode during take-off and landing.

That said, it’s a good idea to refer to the terms and conditions of your individual flight when considering bringing along these items, as the rules can be different depending on which airline you’re travelling with.

So if you're wondering whether you'll be allowed to bring your toothbrush in your hand luggage, your best bet is to contact your airline directly and ask.

  • toiletries and cosmetics, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss

  • You’re limited to one plastic bag per person
  • You must show the bag at the airport security point
  • Containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • They must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
