The BBC TV and Radio personality is known for his work around huge news events.

Back in 1982, he broke the news about the invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina.

His retirement was announced on Wednesday evening on BBC Radio 4 on the PM programme.

His colleagues quickly flocked to social media to pay tribute to his "remarkable" career.

He gushed: "Laurie Margolis aka G3UML. Leaving the BBC after 50 years.

Other staff also wrote on the platform with their own well wishes for the veteran broadcaster.

West of England Correspondent Dan Johnson posted: "An absolute legend of BBC News, one of the steadiest hands on the newsdesk and a total gentleman.

"I got to know the name Laurie Margolis as soon as I started in local radio and he’s been an enormous pleasure to work with.
