Christine handed back to Good Morning Britain hosts Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh who delivered the news about his death to viewers.

Richard and Ranvir had changed into wearing all-black jackets as the confirmed his passing at the age of 88.

Christine had been chatting to The Traitors winner Harry Clark about his participation in religious BBC series Pilgrimage when she stepped in to confirm there had been some breaking news.

Good Morning Britain immediately took over with live reaction.

Correspondent Richard Gaisford was quick with reaction from stunned Brits shocked to learn the news.

Following a break in programming, Richard and Ranvir eventually handed back over to Lorraine in order to continue with her show.

She resumed her chat with Harry Clark, a practising Roman Catholic, who was quick to share his reaction to the sad news.

The Pope's death was confirmed this morning.

The pontiff had been hospitalised for weeks at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after suffering a bout of bronchitis and double pneumonia.

Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, announced in a statement: "At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.

Pope Francis' tragic death has plunged 1.4billion Catholics across the globe into mourning.

It comes just a day after the pontiff appeared in public to mark Easter Sunday and bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square.
