How I’m A Celebrity winner Harry Redknapp and wife Sandra shame Love Island fakers Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer

FAME-HUNGRY young man and woman go on a reality telly show to cop off with someone then decide to stay together in a faux relationship for commercial reasons. Hardly a love story to be proud of, is it? I’m looking at you, Love Island “winners” Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer.
In fact, two very different couples on the box revealed all we need to know about real love versus fake, money-driven TV infatuation this week.
New jungle king Harry Redknapp and devoted wife Sandra’s 50-year love story made millions of us believe in long-term relationships again.
The pair remain devoted to each other, shunning football shenanigans and the showbiz spotlight to spend time together at home, looking after each other, happy and content in each other’s company.
So strong was their mutual respect that Sandra didn’t once let rip at her hapless hubby when he accidentally ran her over in 2016.
That’s certainly a level of love after five decades that most people in these swipe right-obsessed times can only dream about.
Then there are Love Island’s Jack and Dani, who lasted just 129 days together before dashing the hopes of millions of wishful-thinking fans who, for some unknown reason, convinced themselves these two were different from any other reality show millennial couple desperate for instant fame and fortune at almost any cost.
The end of the relationship that captivated millions on ITV2 all summer was met with the same sort of distraught public reaction usually kept for royal and Hollywood divorces.
Just a few hours after dumping downtrodden Jack, Dani confirmed the split with her Instagram followers by writing: “Sadly we’ve come to the realisation that it’s not meant to be long-term. We plan to stay friends. I hope you’ll all understand.”
Well, it wasn’t just the public who didn’t understand, neither did Jack and Dani’s commercial partners . . .
There was fury among producers of Love Island’s pre-recorded Christmas Reunion special, not yet broadcast, that had Jack and Dani’s “love story” right at the centre of the show. There was consternation among organisers of next month’s National Television Awards, who had offered them the gig hosting the red carpet. Together. As a couple.
There were panic calls between the makers of the couple’s new reality show, facing costly re-shoots to end the series with a big fat happily never after.
So who was to save the day? Danny Dyer, who rode in to Jonathan Ross’ chat show and belittled his daughter’s decision using borderline sexist reasoning. He said: “You know what women are like . . . I’m just saying she got a little bit irate, screaming and shouting, the ultimate way to punish him maybe.”
So Daddy Dyer saved the day for Dani, who came into line and is now, irony of all ironies, bleating on about media intrusion into her love life. Yes, the same person who went on a national television show, where people regularly have sex on telly, to find a new boyfriend.
The same person who decided to share every intimate detail of her apparently burgeoning relationship to millions, including when her famous dad and mum met said bloke.
And the same person who has traded off the relationship to make many thousands of pounds — through interviews, paid appearances and even a blooming advice book.
I despair. If that’s the definition of modern love, then all relationships are doomed and there won’t be another Harry and Sandra ever again.
