A NEW Irish horror film has terrified audiences after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week.
The Hole In The Ground has left viewers so on edge that some have called it the scariest film ever made.
It follows the life of Sarah, played by Seána Kerslake, a mum whose son went missing in the woods - only for her to notice some concerning changes in him upon his return home.
The official synopsis reads: "Trying to escape her broken past, Sarah O'Neill is building a new life on the fringes of a backwood rural town with her young son Chris [James Quinn Markey].
"A terrifying encounter with a mysterious neighbour shatters her fragile security, throwing Sarah into a spiralling nightmare of paranoia and mistrust, as she tries to uncover if the disturbing changes in her little boy are connected to an ominous sinkhole buried deep in the forest that borders their home."
Following the film's Sundance premiere, fans took to Twitter to heap praise on the terrifying horror.
One viewer wrote: "The Hole In The Ground is spooky as f***."
Another added: "The Hole In The Ground is the best horror movie I’ve seen in months, holy s***."
A third tweeted: "THE HOLE IN THE GROUND feels a lot like THE BABADOOK, and even has the same strong sense of gothic style..."
The Hole In The Ground has also received critical acclaim, with heaping praise on the horror's "atmospherics", and revelling in the film's " original, visceral shocks".
It has also been favourably compared to other horror successes, including breakout 2018 hit Hereditary and 2014 classic The Babadook.
The Hole In The Ground is due to be released in UK cinemas from 1st March 2019.
